Carson finds Celeste in her room, unpacking. Carson stands in the doorway watching her, hoping Celeste won’t run screaming from her.

Celeste turns from the closet and jumps when she sees Carson. She slaps her palm on her chest. “Oh! Hello.”

“Hi. Um…can I come in?”

Celeste nods.

“Sorry I couldn’t come see you before this. Things were moving so fast. I had to get everybody out of that house and safe.” Carson stops a couple of steps short of Celeste. “Do you want to talk about…what happened?”

“It was scary.”

“Yeah, it was. Wanna know a secret?”

Celeste hugs herself, then nods.

“I was scared, too. Don’t look so surprised. I was afraid I’d screw up, that one of them would get past me, that there were more of them.” Carson tries to think of something soothing to say, but can’t. “Glad you didn’t see it. What I did.”

Celeste hasn’t moved since she went into her self-hug. Her eyes are locked on Carson’s. “Amabelle was with me. She made me stay in my room.”

“She took good care of you. Glad she was there. I wish I could’ve, but…”

“She said that you were busy fighting bad men.”

“Yeah.” Carson’s afraid to ask this question, but she needs to. “Do you still feel safe with me?”

Celeste gnaws on her lower lip, then nods.

Carson’s surprised by how relieved she is. “Good. That’s good. Um…maybe tomorrow you can play more music for me?”

Finally, Celeste ends her clinch and grows a small, bashful smile. “I will like that.”
